I can't imagine an owner over-tightening the nuts on these lights. A flat-rate tech, maybe. But on older cars if you replace the springs with the ones in the service bulletin, that will take pressure off the lens and maybe help with the cracking. I still don't like the idea of grinding away at the tab and simply applying touch-up paint in the hope that it won't rust. I've had way too many BMWs where rust started in the trunk lid area, especially around license lights, and BMW never seems to learn how to protect this area most vulnerable to debris and road salt. I'm just not going to do it! While I was replacing the gooey trunk release handle recently, I removed the license lights just for some preventive maintenance and even on a car from Texas, these looked like a road-grime magnet and were in need of attention. I'll check out my Wisconsin-based 2013 next.
