One can argue about how much the "M" designation ever meant, in the past. For now, it's now just a branding marque used by the marketing department.

That can be true for just about any car company nowadays with whatever designation they use for there 'Sport' model.
At the end of the day, these companies have to sell cars to turn a profit and fund R&D for future cars.
