If you already have the steptronic paddles it is fairly straight forward. I retrofitted the M3 paddles to my car (I did not have any paddles) following this guide: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=600729

For replacing the steptronic paddles with the M3 paddles you would:
  1. Disconnect the battery
  2. Disconnect/remove the steering wheel airbag
  3. Remove the steptronic paddles
  4. Install (screw in) the M3 paddles
  5. Wire up the M3 paddles according the diagram under "Installation Part 1 - Paddles to MFB" in this guide: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=600729
  6. Connect/replace the steering wheel airbag
  7. Reconnect the battery
