The electric connection stays unplugged unless you want to get fancy.
The M3 rack has servotronic, which is assisted steering weight at low speeds, heavier at high, etc..
Your steering will be noticeably heavier with the new rack, but I don't mind it. I ran this rack in my E90 and run it in the 135i. Your biggest concern should be making sure the rack is 100% centered when reinstalled. The marks on there mean almost nothing.
