I've been completely paranoid of oil level after going through towing a Toyota FJ40 out of the middle of Pritchett Canyon in Moab, and rebuilding the engine because of oil problems. No oil light came on, it just ground to a halt without enough oil. Needless to say, I don't trust lights to keep me from destroying an engine. Now I am anal about checking the oil at almost every fill-up, instead of every few months.

I recognize that not everybody has experienced what it takes to get a vehicle with a dead engine out of Pritchett Canyon, so I understand that not everyone shares my paranoia, but that's the way I feel. Even for a road car that will never get anywhere near Pritchett.

Just getting a whiff and a look at the color isn't enough for me.
