Very minimal affect on overall clear coat thickness. Even an extensive correction like this may only be removing fractions of a micron of clear coat. Also the use of the new machines, pads and liquids helps make this process safer. Less heat is generated than old school rotary polishing so the risk of thinning or burn through is lessened.
Heavy compounding aside you can machine polish modern clear coats, especially harder paints like those found on most all German cars many times over without thinning out the clear in a dangerous way. Obviously be smart nobody needs their paint machined polished 5x per year
