It was a common driver error. And a lot of people had to pony up for repairs, usually a top end rebuild due to bent valves (most BMW motors are known as "interference engines" because the piston top is capable of contacting the valves if things aren't timed just right). It's definitely not a good idea to float the valves on an over-rev.
