Correct. The height is more of an issue then width. It's easier to fit a wide tire with a shorter OD then a tall tire that is a little narrower. This doesn't apply to every situation, but specifically the above mentioned situation.

275's fit in the rear on our 9.5", but 265's are shorter, and most people won't be running 255's up front. You'll see better results with a narrower rear if you can't go extra wide up front.
