Mind you, it was wet and had DSC on. Could traction control have cut the power and forced the engine to enter limp mode to protect the turbos/engine???

It could be various faults, and you wont really know without a proper diagnostic tool.
I had the same symptoms as you under the same conditions, on my 135i running JB3 whilst on my second HPFP..
In my case, It wasn't the HPFP but the "Turbo pressure sensors" from running to much boost.
