Our cars came with Pentosin 75W80 MTF3 no MTF2. Now BMW uses MTF5 & 6 I believe. The MTF3 has been superseded to MTF5, the last time I checked at my dealer.

I use Redline's ATF-D4 in my manual trans 135i. You can also use their D6 or MTL fluids in our manual transmissions as well.

Errr... well... you could screw up your transmission by using the wrong spec oil. There is a reason why BMW recommends certain fluids.

Oil does have a shelf life. After a few years of sitting on the shelf... the additives in the oil will start to separate out of suspension. I wouldn't use old oil in my lawn mower, much less my pride and joy. But that's just me.
