It's definitely a thing. Tons of documented cases on this very forum. More on N54Tech and E90Post.

Get those oil filter housings leaks fixed fellas. After belt is sucked through the front main seal, it gets much more expensive than a cheap gasket and a few hours labor. Infact, blast the intake valves at the same time and make a day of it!

Original problem could have also been caused by a loose power steering pulley bolt, as well documented by Jake.
