If we want to venture more East this year, we might consider driving the Grossglockner High Alpine Road too (
http://www.grossglockner.at/en/hochalpenstrasse/) - so that you can also tick that box on your bucket list - and access the Dolomites from the East.
Then a hotel in the Cortina d'Ampezzo area would be the right place to get a good rest on Friday evening, getting ready for the Saturday trip in the heart of the Dolomites (Sella whereabouts).
