225 square is not an ideal performance configuration. That may be a required setup for some very specific stock autocross class, but in general, that would be a narrower tire setup than what any other bmw model would typically run. Since we're performance focused, we try to configure and steer people to setups that are ideal, and we shy away from variations that don't really need to exist.

As a comparison of tires sizes for different chassis, we see the following:

E30 M3's are running 235. Most everyone runs 245 or 255 square on the E36 and on the E46 non-m. 265 or 275 square on the E46 M3, 255 square on the E9X non-m, and 275 square on the E9X.

17x8.5" et40 with 225/40/17 will fit now on a stock car. the tire's narrow and clears the fender front and rear.
