perhaps your engine is just using a little bit of oil. Nothing bad in that. Its normal.
10w40 oil is
thicker than
5w40. So no that would not help. Perhaps the oil that is in your engine does not meet BMW specs? It must say:
BMW Long Life 1 or
LL-1 (for high sulfur fuels) or
BMW Long Life 4 or
LL-4 (for low sulfur fuels)
and have:
API SM and
ACEA C2, C3
BMW says you can use any oil that meets the above specs and in these viscosities...
0w40, 5w40, 5w30

Here is a german website that sells the BMW oil very cheap... 6 euros per liter. Normally most dealers will charge 20 to 30 euros per liter!

PS: I use
German Castrol RS Edge 0w40 full synthetic LL-4 oil in my car. You have to be carefull with oils because there are many simular sounding names that ARE different oils. Read the label and make sure it is suited for your car.
