A trick I learned in the army (Cut Lunch Commandos) back in black boots days, was to "bone" out small tears in the leather with the back of a spoon until the torn leather stretched out to fit the raw part. I have since applied the technique over many years to my wife's leather shoes, particularly when she skins a heel. After stretching the torn bit back, you put a drop of contact cement on a toothpick, and put it between the surfaces. "Bone" again to get everything flush, and let it set overnight. You can then apply a small bit of leather dressing. I admit to being an OCD'er too, but this fix costs a fraction of a cent.
