Track day tire/wheel setup: how to get the most laps for the buck?

Hi,

This is my first post, though I was in read-only mode for long. I love my 1M, which had its first track day last week. Enjoyed every bit of it, but this car can eat PS2s quick! (I did a few DEs in my previous car, a Z4 - which had less weight, less HP -> less wear and tear.)

So, here is my question: what tire/wheel setup you recommend for a track day newbie (still using MDM) who just wants to have a great time with the car, not competing anyone? I would like to make my track days relatively affordable so I can do more of them throughout the season. I am willing to change my wheels at the track and only use my "track wheels" in the dry.

As I see it now, the tread on PS2s could be finished in a couple dozen laps. How many track miles/kms/sessions/days can you do on one set of tires? What track tires would you pick if your goal is not ultimate grip, but reasonable tire cost per lap?

What do you think about using some 18" wheels with 245/35R18 front, 265/35R18 rear? These are smaller diameter than stock, but offer more cheap tire choices. Do you think these sizes could be OK? Or do I really have to go with /40 if going down to 18" wheels?

Thanks guys!
