Connecting the battery under the hood should work fine. You may have to wait a few minutes, however, for the computer to figure itself out before it will start to do what you want. I would try it after a minute, then 5 minutes, etc.. all the way up to 30 minutes before I gave up on this. I see no reason it will not work. The electronics are a small draw and the jump terminals under the hood are a strong connection, easily able to transmit the necessary current.

If you get it open, you might be able to rig a cable or something to the emergency release inside the trunk so you can still take the battery out.

If the battery completely died, like got an internal short, wouldn't it create the same situation?
