Unhappy Water Pump or Something Else?

Hi all,

I own a 2009 135i, approx 171000 km (Canada). Had it since day one.

In 2015, I had the water pump fail, and subsequently repaired.

Now here is the weird part.

For past 6'ish months, after driving my car for 30-40 minutes, fall, winter or spring, the rad fan will turn on full blast, to the point where it sounds like an airplane engine. This will happen without fail, every day, to and from work or play.

About 4 weeks ago I had the yellow 'coolant' light come on the dash, and I lost power. I pulled over, waited a few minutes, started the car and was able to drive home. No red coolant light, nothing. I checked the coolant and it was fine. Fast forward 3 weeks to late last week, and the same exact thing happened. Yellow (not red) coolant light, pull over, turn off car, wait, turn on, start driving (still no power really) but after 10 seconds, full power and I go home.

The rad fan maxing out seems to be a sign that the waterpump is at fault, but this has been happening for 6+ months. I can't imagine that being normal. I also don't want to spend $1200ish CAD to replace the pump/thermostat if that was never the issue.

So, can someone please tell me what the heck may be happening here? Is it the waterpump, or is it something else?

Also, I did check for codes with a friends reader, and nothing came up.

Thanks in advance,
Marv
