M cars are about balance and handling.
Balance, handling AND engines.

Ever since the mid to late 70s when the M5 came out, BMW M always dedicated an engine to their M cars.

So from the 70s till 2010, that is 40 years of having specific M engines.

As Chris Harris said, this was a "Skunk works project", they did not have the time, the N54 is known for its over engineered robust internals and it was mass produced, i could see why they would "quickly" tune it and use it instead of the V8 M3 (that an some internal politics).

But saying that M cars are ONLY about balance and handling is so incorrect, the engine is such a big deal for M cars.

Otherwise M would have used "standard" engines with a small tune and call it a day. It is like saying an AMG car with a standard Mercedes engine...it does not work.

Yes the WHOLE PACKAGE of the 1M works very well, so well that it is regarded one of the best, because M tinkered with that N54 just enough to make it so. But to say "Handling and balance" and disregarding the engine....that is not true.
Throwing a tinkered N54 into the 1M to get it produced quickly is PART of the story. Did you know that BMW execs had rejected the 1M proposal several times and they kept building it? The story is more M than most M cars.

Porsche copied the recipe exactly for the GT4 and it worked again. Carrera S engine thrown into a skunked up Cayman.
