If a "new" version of the original M1 is on BMW's potential future build list, they should definitely NOT call THAT car an M1. That would be more confusing than confusing the (very) few people that even know what the original M1 is. Does that make sense? Any potentially new customers coming to the BMW brand would be confused as to why the M3 is an M version of the 3 series, the M5 is an M version of the 5 series and the M6 is an M version of the 6 series, but the M1 is a super-high end car, not an M version of the 1 series...
I think the M version of the 1 series should definitely be named the M1. Any "new" version of the original M1 that may or may not ever be built should find a new name. How about M1!11
