It has to do with the wear in the cylinder walls and pistons and piston rings. BMW had a big, big problem in the early 1990's with their US V8 engines. They ended up replacing A LOT of engine's under a special extended warranty program. It was traced to the US high sulfur fuels. That was when BMW started testing and approving special oil for each market.

I would use only an LL-1 oil in your car.
