I am running an ipod shuffle from the aux plug and the sound quality is just fine. Use the ipod to up the sound volume not the headunit it makes a difference.
Keep in mind you won't be able to use the steering wheel buttons to control the ipod, which is why I use the shuffle. To mess with the click wheel on a regular ipod while you are driving is dangerous.
