If the car is local i see no reason why not just get a mech buddy to check out the car or if the guy is willing to you can take it to the dealer and do a full diagnosis for $150 just to put your suspicions to bed.

Thanks for the input, the car is 7 hours away but if I do decide to get it I will definitely get it diagnosed first.
