$12K is a lot of money for any car with cosmetic or worse damage. Add $10K to it and you'd probably be able to find a clean late model 135i. However, $10K won't buy you a lot of body work if the car turns out to have significant damage.
If I suspected frame damage, I'd have the car put on a frame alignment rack. Check with a local body shop. Sometimes they can spot problems by eye. BTW, I wouldn't trust anything from CarFax.
