Even with a malfunctioning VVT motor, it would still run as I had this issue. It'll throw it into limp mode but will run and won't cause any harm to the engine.
Check the valve cover for any cracks as it could be the issue with the oil and spark plugs. Get it changed if it's cracked, that will cause many a issues.
You can check my name to see the post I made in regards to changing this part. It took almost 10 years with no instructions on how to change it. Don't attempt it by yourself as there is many issues that you can run into but you could follow my post for a guide if you will, but there is a link to the INSA instruction.
