If you only jack up one side of the car, the sway bar is fully compressed. The solution is to put the front of the car on jack stands so both wheels are unloaded. The rubber bushings on the arms will still provide some upward force, but not too much. Its better Not to take the front wheels off the car because the weight of them is a help balancing the forces. Also there's no need to remove the 3 nuts on the strut hat completely.
