In my case, it was necessary both to set compatibility to XP service pack 3 and set the latency timer setting to 1 to get this far. I got the same infrequent communication errors with either individually.
What Std Tools package are you using? What Windows version is your machine?

Asking b/c the download from Bimmergeeks' site works fine on my Windows 7 computer.
