1978 M1. If so, you must have gotten a very good price for it.
I have not seen anyone compare the 1M to the E36 M3. Most comparisons bring up the E30 M3 or the E46 M3 CSL. Captain Kirk did a great comparison between the E90 M3 and the 1M. That thread can be found by a quick search.
