The one thing that makes me think that BMW will not make an M1 with this generation of the 1-Series is the fact that the 1-Series is really already 1/2 way thru its lifecycle. It came out in Europe in 2004 and just went thru a "mid-life freshening". That means that the chassis really only has 2 to 4 years to live before the next version comes out. Since M versions typically come out 2 years after the regular version, the M1 would be out for only 1 or 2 model year. That's a lot of development cost for little return.
