The Golf R is at least temporarily out of production now. Glad I traded in my 2016 on a 2018 (at minimal cost and mostly to get the new 6 year warranty) when I had the chance. On balance I prefer it to my 2018 M2; it's way more practical and a bit more nimble, although less luxurious.
