BMWs original iDrive controller could change the way it 'felt' to the user depending on what was available to select on-screen. For example, you would feel resistance if you rotated the controller and you reached the end of a list - it would prevent you rotating it any further, thus giving you tactile feedback.

It was very clever really and I was disappointed to see them drop it, but many users were complaining that it was buggy and irritating at times. It was also only on cars with Professional Navigation systems, not Business. The Business Navigation system had the same non-haptic controller that all the new cars have now.
