Agreed. In our case, we were very uncertain that an EV (even with a back up gas engine) would work for us. So, it made sense. It helped that some of the available leased cars had great terms (low payments).

If I'm on the fence re EV or wanted to try it out, I'd be willing to pay a premium (higher than expected lease payment) to "test drive" a lease assumption EV for 6-9 months.
