My understanding is the only way to get rid of the CEL from catless headers is a tune. If there was another way, people would run catless headers with no tune a lot more. But like you're experiencing, w/o a tune the CEL is annoying.
I would definitely suggest getting on top of the maintenance before investing more in power mods or even suspension. Once that's all sorted then you can put the money into one or the other. The key to a headache free BMW ownership experience is preventative maintenance, which I'm sure you're aware of coming from an E30 - but even more so with these newer cars.
