This stopped after BMW issued a service bulletin in April 2010 to stop replacing dashes:

"A slight depression or outline may be visible on the top, passenger side of the instrument panel. This outline is created by the perforated edge of the lid covering the passenger front airbag. This outline is a normal condition and is visible on most vehicles.
