I knew a guy that did exactly what you are talking about to his stock muffler (E82 N54) and it didn't sound much different at all. Not worth it, IMO. Essentially the stock muffler already does that, except inside the muffler. There's a thread around here somewhere where I cut the stock muffler apart to investigate what's going on in there.
