my story is very similar to SCSedona1 - my car doesn't recognize the key even when i am sitting INSIDE the vehicle, that kinda puts the tint issue to rest in my case. i have to rotate the key vertical in my pocket for it to start the car.
for you guys interested in the inner working of the CA system i posted the technical docs in the electronics section of the forums. very limited info, but more than BMW gives us.
