Besides, nobody doubts that the Z4M is a true M, so I don't see any such connotation with the name 1M.

If BMW builds a supercar that is the successor of the original M1, it won't be called M1. Why? Because that would create too much confusion and people would wonder if the M3 is better than the supercar M1. They'd probably use something like M8 or M9.
