It's all about what tire and how much you're lowered. APEX has to cover their butt to some extent, so they are conservative. On my stock suspension, I was able to run 17x8.5 or 8", 40mm F/R (any wheels with those dimensions of course) with a "normal" fitting 245 tire. Oversized rubber, like a lot of track/autox tires may require a slight rear fender roll and a bit of front camber.
IMHO, a lot more people should be looking into running that setup. Cheap tires, better ride, better chassis balance, etc.
