They can pull the airbag off without messing with the clockspring. I think it's only once you remove the bolt behind the airbag as well as the steering wheel itself that the clockspring becomes exposed. I don't see why they would need to remove the steering wheel to replace the airbag, so it's hard to see how they could have messed anything up.
