You can place a spare tire(space saver or full sized) in the trunk. I ordered BMW jack kit too. For me it is not an option to be at the merci on the side of the road in a far away land like Italy or Romania when driving thru the Alps. Its worth loosing "some" trunk space for the comfort of knowing I won't be stuck - buying a tire at God knows what price in another country.
A lot of guys went to junk yards and bought the space saver tire from a Mitsubishi Gallant. That spare donut seems to work on our cars too. You want a 17 inch wheel.
But for me... having a full size tire was the way to go. I bought the steel winter wheel for an e46 330ci and I haven't looked back.
