The ticking has to do with the machine grooves in the rotors and the wheels microscopically moving as weight shifts. Different wheels may or may not make the noise. There are these two articles on the issue but buying the expensive wheel shims is not necessary in my experience:

What I did to resolve the ticking noise was buy the Mueller-Kueps rotor face and wheel cleaning grinder (75mm) and did the outer rotor faces and inner wheel mating surfaces. This 100% stopped the noise, even on hot days.
