Full 3" turbo back exhaust....need opinions!
So it looks like I may be working with Vince @ VK Motorwerks on developing a full 3" turbo back exhaust system for our cars. This complete system would be 3" downpipes off the turbos that will come together at a 3" y-pipe and 3" back. Would anyone else be interested in this setup? We'll be trying different mufflers for the best sound & performance. One other large factor we have in mind is price! Looks like currently any exhaust system out there that is downpipe back runs $1k+ easily. I know Vince wants to keep this exhaust at LESS THAN $1k for a full TURBO BACK exhaust. So let's hear some opinions.

Full 3" turbo back from start to end for less than 1k, what's not to like? The question is it possible. I'm interested if it's catted (don't mind paying extra for cats, I just don't like the smell and troubles)

would it be sold as 1 unit, or could i just buy dp's, cat-back or axle-back? (that way you reach a larger market) sounds like a great idea, especially if you could split them up...good luck

I hate to burst a bubble of happiness, but it sounds like it won't fit. Good luck though!

I don't know if the market would be larger if they provided it separately. Who makes 3" downpipes or a 3" cat-back? You'd have to go with a custom setup to work with either one of these parts.

Less than $1000 for the complete sytem would be an incredible price and I'm sure it would be a big hit as long as it had decent sound. |

I think you are confused. The OP says 3" downpipes that join into a Y pipe. That means two 3" downpipes joining in a "Y pipe" which looks lke a Y and becomes a single 3" pipe. So you are going from two 3" pipes to a single 3" pipe. A single 3" pipe has less area than two 2.5 " pipes. You need to have a somewhat gradual taper from two 3" pipes to one three inch pipe other wise you will have back pressure. Going from dual 3" gradually to two 2.5 " to the even smaller area single 3" pipe is all part of the taper. The OP is not talking about a DUAL full 3" exhaust system. That would have issues with fitement on the 1er.

Thanks for all the comments guys, I will keep everyone updated as the progress goes on. It's only in the development stages at this point, but hopefully we'll have something put together in a couple weeks. If anyone knows of VK Motorwerks, quality is NEVER an issue. Their oil cooler kit is top notch & at non BMW prices. Their new intercooler is direct BOLT-ON (no trimming, tried it out myself) & is hundreds less than competitors. Obivously price for the exhaust is not set in stone, but Vince is always looking to give the best possible price. I'm sure once all said & done, it will still be less than others out there.

Well considering you are taking two 3" pipes wouldn't you want to "Y" them into a 4" or greater to reduce back pressure? I know from personal experience on my 300zx switching from 2.5" downpipes/catback to 3" all the way made a nice improvement in spool time and torque, keep in mind this is also a parallel twin-turbo system but it is a V engine and the pipes are separated all the way back. This is with Garrett GT BB GT2560R Turbos. Keep us updated, I'm sure there is more to be gained than what is currently available on the market.
