What would you buy to replace your 1 series?
I bought my '09 128i to replace my last daily driver that was nearing the end of its life. I know the 128i won't be cheap to maintain (and I hate how reliant it is on computers), but I'm willing to put in the money and time for such a fun little car. Call me crazy, but I'd rather sink 10K into maintaining and upgrading a car that I love, vs almost any new car available today. New cars just don't do it for me.
If I had to pick an alternative I'd go with the 2019 WRX STI. It's not exactly analog, but it does still reward/punish driving skills. The Civic Type R looks like a dream to drive, but it's hideous and requires a $5k+ dealer markup. So what car would get you out of your 1 series? |

Nothing on the 'new' market is really that interesting to me.
Maybe the new BMW Supra mish mosh, but even that looks like it's going to be boring. If/When I replace the M, it'll probably be older.

So many options...
If I did new and needed to haul my kid maybe GTI, if new and 2 seats is OK maybe a Miata, go for it and do a convertible as well. Subaru WRX or STI is a contender but I can't get excited about it, but perhaps the BRZ though. A 1-2 year old 2-series might do it, or an A3. Maybe time to own a cheap Porsche i.e. Cayman or Boxster. Corvette? Z's are way, way overdue for an overhaul Mustang / Camaro I feel are cool but too big. Hell I'm all over the map. Glad I'm not actually faced with this decision. |

I have a 135 so a little different than your situation. However, I find it very difficult to find a worthy replacement. I would consider an M2, RS3, M4 or possibly M3. I also like the X4 M40i.

If I could find a Cayman I could afford, that would probably be first on the list, though the ND Miata RF is quite tempting. Anything other than those two would be much older: maybe a pristine late E30 318is or E36 318ti.

an M, Cayman S, or 911. More than likely it'd be an older car as the new models bore me.

Pretty much what I expected. There aren't many new cars available today that can match the excitement of the 1 series without spending some serious cash.
I think the Miata and BRZ/GT-86 equal the fun factor but lose out as daily drivers. Unless something dramatically special arrives (2nd gen Toybaru, Z replacement, new S2000), I'll be sticking with my 128i for many years to come. |

I've contemplated this myself. For me, I'd consider either a GTI or golf R. I did just replace my '12 128 with a nicer '13 128. This one will be a long term car for me....

New: Mustang GT350R. 8200rpm is best rpm.
Used: Another 1'er. Maybe a 328i Wagon with all the parts from my car, so I can share with friends.

Cayman or Boxster, which is what I almost bought before my car. Certainly not a newer BMW as I don't see anything they've made since (2, 3, 4) as being my kind of car. Except maybe an M2 or M3 just to see what a real M is like.
Maybe an Audi A7 if I wanted more space and could afford to keep it running. Those things are ****ing beautiful. |

This and the lack of a 2-door hatch are my reasons for passing on the R. I love the way they drive when new, but I'm scared about long-term reliability...and that's from a BMW owner. |
