Space saver spare

Just in case owners are concerned about using the puncture gung you can get a space saver spare. 17" does fit.

How about the front? Does it clear front brakes?

This is a great solution for traveling inside your local area but a bunch of us 1Addicts were all on a tour about 400 kilometers (250 miles) away from home on a Sunday in Germany and one of our guys got a punctured tire. As he had changed to normal tires, he didn't have RFTs and nothing was open for him to get another tire or get it fixed. So he had to drive the entire way home at 80kph (50mph) and after that he said BS on that and went out and got a fullsize spare...

That guy Rick is talking about was ME! And it sucked driving around on that skinny little donut. It does fit on both axles. But I had a flat tire on the rear... and being limited to only 80 kph(on the Autobahn!!!) was too much punishment for me. Plus the rear end of the car was wiggling around like crazy when you changed lanes the tinniest bit! It was very unstable with one 3.5 inch tire on one side and a 9 inch tire on the other side of the car.

Lucky for me, a local 1Addict, Swadeness lent me one of his 18 inch winter wheels, and I drove home on that. For me this exposed the problem with space saver tires. When you need to use one... you really just need a real full size tire. The next week I bought a steel 17" wheel and a 205/50HR17 tire. I also have the BMW jack kit that they sell.

For a 1M you need an 18 inch wheel to clear the front brakes. My steel wheel is a 17 inch dia - min wheel size needed to clear 135i front brakes. My steel 17" is from an e46 330i or e46 M3, 7jx17 wheel.

So you need an 18" steelie... which I do not think is made for BMW's. ? I think your best bet would be to order an 18" alloy from BMW or an aftermarket wheel in that size.

I'm running an 18" BMW steelie -- perhaps made for an X5(??) -- along with a donut I got off e-bay that came off a Mitsu Evo. Have less than $130 in the whole set-up.

There's an old thread about this somewhere....

That's right Neil., I forgot about those 18" steel (donut) wheel from the X5/6.

When I said no 18" steelie I meant a full size 7jx18" wheel, not a 4" wide donut.

That's funny you should say that. Tire Rack did not have 18" steel wheels in for the 1M. They had a couple of alloy wheel's . Thanks for the helpful response.

Yup, I have the space saver wheel, and it sits on a shelf in my garage. On the rare occasion I take my car out of town, I throw a full size wheel in the trunk.

I was thinking of getting the BMW style 270 18x8 wheel and using it as a full size spare mounted with a 235/40R18 tire. Does anyone know if this would be suitable for both the front and rear on the 1M. I believe so.

Why not just carry a plug kit? Unless you get a blowout you can be up and running in 10 - 15 minutes, and not lose all that trunk space.

Just a bit tardy on my part responding. I do carry a plug kit. However, I do want a spare for the times if/when the damage is too severe for a plug. While rare, this has happened in my family.

Yes Leif, the second part number is for a alloy wheel AND tire. BMW sells their wheels with and without tires.
