Rear diff oil leak - any DIY threads around?

Hi guys,

My car is a 6 speed manual N54 135i.

I have a oil leak coming from my rear diff, where the tailshaft connects the front of the diff (haven't had a chance to take photo's)

Previous owner had a shop install a Quaiffe LSD so I'm assuming they may have reused or poorly installed the front seal.

I plan on replacing this myself, and I have found which seal I need thanks to c0ris07!

Seal to be replaced
Item# 9 or OEM Part# 33107609536

Seal measurements 50X78X10/15

So in conclusion:
1. Anyone have a workshop manual to check the torque required on the pinion nut?
2. Is there any DIY threads of diff rebuild or similar repairs?

Thanks guys
Steve

Steve,

You need 33107609536

31507609535 is for an AUS delivered AUTO 135i

Bentley manual torque values below

It also makes special note about marking the pinion end and nut and when re-tightening to not go past this point. This is because there is a crush tube between your small and large pinion bearings which is pre-set to get the correct pinion height. Over tightening will crush it further and change your pinion height (not good).

Also mentions a few "BMW tools" for pressing the drive flange onto the pinion shaft enough to install the collar amoungst other things. Having not done it myself I'm not sure these are essential tools or just "make your life easier" tools.

Good luck!

Order two seals(two of the same seal)... bc you might mess up the first one on the DIY install. Try to use a seal flange tool to pound in the new seal. Use some grease on the seal before installing it.

Because I'm an expert

No seriously I have spent the last 3 months sorting out an LSD and now well versed across the diffs, including every right and wrong part (I have been sent wrong pinions etc.)

Also your car is the exact same year and month build as mine.

If your on RealOEM you see 2 different diffs don't you? One is for auto and one is for manual. You can tell by the final drive being 3.08. Manual also has the flex-joint diff flange, auto has the splined on driveshaft. It is 33107609536 you need.

Ahhh genius! That's why there is 2 diffs lol

When you say flex joint - do you mean universal joint? I'm trying to refer to the table with torque figures

Maybe ill measure the current torque with my digital torque wrench and guestimate what its closest to??

The crush tube you mention, would you recommend that I replace it? Or do you think that would be opening a can of worms?

Hmm.. Do you think I should disregard the torque specs and stick to the marking I draw on the pinion and nut?
