I’m considering buying a used Series 1 here in Spain and wanted to humbly ask for some honest advice before I commit.

I’ll start by saying I’m not a BMW fanatic. I’m actually a long-time Volvo nut — I’ve owned a 240 and, more recently, a 940. Those big old estates have basically defined my driving life and, quite literally, got me to where I am now. That said, they are becoming a it of a burden.

I do an 8/10 hour drive several times a year, and doing that in the old Volvos has slowly turned into an endurance sport. Comfortable in theory, yes — but noisy, thirsty, and tiring in practice. I’m now looking for something more efficient and a bit less punishing on long motorway runs.

What’s drawing me to this car isn’t brand loyalty, it’s:
  • the efficiency
  • the price, which is genuinely good for this part of Spain
  • and, honestly, the seller, who seems straightforward and transparent (which is rare here)

Car details:
  • 2008 BMW Series 1 E82
  • 118d automatic
  • 143 cv
  • ~130,000 miles
  • Serviced by BMW up to 100,000 miles

Seller has a partial service book and confirmation of the last service and is very nice to talk to, although... they are on BWM expert either. I’m based in Spain, where buying second-hand cars can be a bit of a nightmare. I’ll be travelling around 14 hours to see the car, so I want to go in as prepared as possible.

My main concern is the timing chain. The seller has no idea whether it’s ever been addressed, and I’ve read enough about these engines to be cautious. That’s really the big unknown for me.

For context, while I’m new to BMWs, I’m not afraid of diagnostics. I’m a computer geek by trade, and my Volvo 940 literally came with a built-in diagnostic computer — pull out a pin, stick it into slot 1–6, count how many times the bulb blinks. Absolute 1992 magic, and it still works.

That is a joke. I really am quite handy with IT and I am looking forward to having a car I can plug this BMW into my trusty ThinkPad and poke around... verrrry much appeals to me — that’s my kind of tinkering.

My questions:
1. Is there any sensible way to assess timing chain health on this engine without lifting the engine or major teardown? Perhaps using the software and the break-out cable?

2. Specific to this engine: Are there specific noises, fault codes, or live data I should be paying attention to?

3. Anything on this model that would make you walk away, even if the price is right?
I’m not chasing perfection — just trying to avoid an expensive mistake after a very long trip.

My friendly mechanic doesn’t work weekends, so I thought I’d pester you lot instead! I hope you don't mind such a DEMANDING first post.

I’ve uploaded a short video of the car in question, owner tells me this is a "cold" start this morning; https://youtube.com/shorts/9FCDaswwSKY

Thanks in advance for any honest input — much appreciated. The more I read about the Series 1 the more I think it will be a fine entry into your world, maybe I would like to join the club!
