Shift light installed
I have been using a Shift light which only needs to be connect to a cigar socket. The controller somehow detects the RPM signal from the power line.
The product has been used for about 10 years and it is discontinued product from a Japanese manufacturer PIVOT. http://pivotjp.com/product/shiftlamp/ssl-m-e.html Anyhow, when I tried to connect, it did not work properly. The shift light was on and off randomly. Our 1M has a CAN-bus and the RPM signal was in the CAN-bus which is distributed to the DME and instrument cluster and so on. I searched for the raw RPM signal but it was not documented anywhere. The only wire I found was X60005 connector from crank shaft sensor in DME box in the engine bay. And then, I found this post about E90. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...018#post847018 It says that the pin 9 of the OBDII port carries the RPM signal. I have checked the pin 9 with an oscilloscope to find out that the RPM signal is in fact there with our E82 1M. with idle with a little bit higher RPM I have connected to the wire of pin 9 of the OBDII port. The shift light is working perfect. I could not take a good picture when I was driving so the picture is in the garage. Just for your imagination. |

I take it that in your link (pin 10 /yellow wire) pin 9 the one you used for tacho is directly above pin 10 ??

Thank you for your comments.
The description in the linked article is mistaken. The pin the yellow wire is inserted is pin 9. Only pin 9 is not numbered in the OBD socket. OBD socket is a 16 pin socket. Eight pins in each row. I am in a break in period right now so that I should not exceed 5500RPM. But it was not easy driving around with one eye on the tacho meter and the other on the road. So, I have set the shift light to 5000 RPM so that I don't have to always look at the tacho meter. I could not take a good picture when doing over 5000 RPM so I took one in the garage while the car is on just to show the image when it is on. That is why the CEL is also on. I will sure go to Leipzig with my 1M! |
