If you park near a tree at all, look under the hood!
Leaves roll down between the windshield and the hood. There are two pockets next to either fender that are really good at collecting leaves and acorns. Found the source of an odd noise I was hearing.

The grill can be removed and the leaves (and other debris) along with it. Then you replace the grill. Kinda like the trap in your kitchen sink.

While I'm lucky enough to have a garage space for my 128i, my E46 remains outside and also picks up lots of tree litter in the front corners under the trunk lid. No grill there so it needs to be periodically removed by hand.
