1M engine not the N54?
I'm sure you guys have all seen this on the front page by now.
http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=419700 But the part that piqued my interest was the last paragraph: "...they are in the process of evaluating an X3 35iS using the same engine from the relevant Z435iS and US only 335iS. And an X3M using the powerplant from the upcoming 1M." This seems to indicate that the engine in the 1M will NOT be the N54. |

SCOTT has mentioned multiple times that the 1M will be powered by a tweaked version of the N55, which will be the basis of the engine powering the F30 M3.
He has NEVER mentioned the N54--it seems obvious to me that BMW is phasing the N54 out instead of ramping its use up... The only new cars getting the N54 are the "is" cars....can't see the 1M/F30 M3 using anything like that....

They should use a 3.0 alu mag engine and pump out 320hp with 8500 rpm on tap. That s a thru motorsports engine. That s like a swiss watch.
What we get is a Casio with a price tag on it from a rolex. |

There is a significant mistake in that post:
"they are in the process of evaluating an X3 35iS using the same engine from the relevant Z435iS and US only 335iS." The Z4 35is and 335is have different N54 variants. The Z4 35is has 340hp and upgraded air intake and air intake ducts whereas the 335is has 322hp and a standard N54 air intake.

Ever driven a turbo hard. I did my 135i. It was drinking more then my E46 M3.
I could drive more fuel efficient with my E46 M3 than with my 135i. |

Turbo cars are more efficient.
see MB 6.2V8 vs new 5.5 TT v8.. see E90 M3 vs next gen M3 plans see Audi S4 V8 vs supercharged 3.0T S4 today see 135 vs 128 (1 less mpg for lots of torque and hp) See Hyundai Sonata 2.0T vs 2.4NA - 80 more hp, still 34 mpg.. |

Why? Can't be worse than the X5M, IMO.
Best regards, south

A SUV sports car with less than 600Nm of torque would be useless. I wonder what engine would they put in an X3 M...the 1M engine would not have sufficient torque, I think.

Progression of technology. Imagine what it can do in optimal form: light weight, low profile platform.
