Cracks on side mirror brackets
Hi, when I picked up my brand new baby M earlier this summer there was minor cracks on the side mirror brackets on both sides. So when I had the car in for the first service they switched the mirrors or maybe just the brackets. Now one month later both sides have crack'd again.
Is this a common fault or am I the only one seeing this issue? Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get rid of the problem? Last edited by kaptenM; 08-06-2012 at 11:25 AM.. Reason: picture added |

Is someone smacking your mirrors? My mirrors don't have any cracks like that.

the thing that makes this even more interesting is that the part that is crack'd is not "attached" to the actual mirror. I have manually tried to push the mirror upwards to see if it could hit the cushion. Thought that this could happen during hard acceleration or bumpy roads but I don't think this is the case.

it doesn't matter how I move the mirror, no contact on the cushion or stretching in the material. It looks as if the cushions are bolted on to tight and thats why they have crack'd.

Did anyone have interaction with BMW representatives/dealers on this topic? Curious on a 'official' response to this

What products do you (c.q. your usual car wash) use to wash your 1M.
Otherwise: any relevant specifics about temperature changes (garage vs. outside ?).

I have exaxtly the same problem on my 1M both sides
Any other UK owners hads any success with the dealers and has anyone established what can cause it? Looks to me like there maybe a fixing screw behind where its cracked that may have been over-tightened when assembled causing the cracks...? Any or many others have this problem? Take a look as you may have missed it! Chris |

Both my mirror caps have the same cracks as OP's car
It was Dack who mentionned it at our last meet. So what options do we have? replacing them with new ones under warranty so that they can crack again . |

Mine has both, too. Just not as extreme as the above pics, though.

I also have two small cracks forming on the driver side, need to check passenger side. Really weird since that part does not seem to be under any structural stress.

But there are no auto-folding mirrors for the 1M. The "power folding" mirror is an option either mated with a package or independent both in US and outside, that's what I remember. I myself paid for that through a package called outside mirrors including this function plus auto dimming exterior and interior mirrors (EU spec). Anyone needs the mirrors fold at the time you lock the car needs to do that through aftermarket coding like some other stuff. So, folding exercise might be related to the problem but not anything like "auto-folding" imo.

I suspect these cracks are caused by over tightening of the mirror triangles(from the inside of the door panel) when the car was assembled. I would just have your mirrors replaced at your local dealer and have them open a PUMA case for this. I am sure BMW must know what is going on.
When I toured Leipzig they said they keep files on who built each car at each station the car travels thru at the factory. So they know who makes mistakes and after so many problems are detected... they can reassign said worker to some other dept IF they keep making mistakes. lol I wonder if the same guy(or gal) was responsible for all these cracks. ?
